This article answers frequently asked questions from company administrators and workers about FCA’s drug testing process. It covers scheduling and changing appointments, identification requirements, testing methods, prescription reviews, facility options, billing, and result updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Are workers required to schedule drug testing appointments?
- Most clinics/facilities do not require an appointment for drug testing. With that said, during the onboarding process, workers are asked to choose the facility and appointment date for their drug test. If a worker has not scheduled an appointment through the FCA system, the facility/clinic will not be able to screen the worker.
- Once an appointment is scheduled, a worker can change the facility and day by logging into the FCA Worker app or Worker Portal profile to make appointment changes.
- An worker has 30 days from the appointment date to screen at the chosen facility. After 30 days a new appointment must be scheduled.
-
Is the drug test a urine test or a swab?
- Currently all FCA testing is done by the worker providing a urine sample.
-
Can workers provide medication prescriptions at the time of their drug test?
- Facility staff cannot accept prescriptions from workers when collecting a urine sample. If the initial test result is inconclusive or presumed positive, the facility sends the sample to a contracted laboratory for additional testing.
After testing is complete, the laboratory sends the results to FCA’s Medical Review Officer (MRO). The MRO contacts the worker to request prescriptions for any substances reported as positive by the laboratory. - The MRO then reviews the information provided by the worker and enters the final result into the FCA platform.

What if the drug testing facilities listed during registration are too far away?
- The facilities listed during registration are contracted drug testing locations. FCA generally adds facilities by state to give projects a broad selection of locations. If the listed options do not meet your location needs, FCA can add additional contracted facilities to the available choices.
- When does my company become responsible for payment for a drug test?
- Your company becomes responsible for payment once facility staff have verified the worker and the drug screening status is “In Progress.”
- FCA processes invoices and charges the credit card on file on a weekly basis for services provided.
-
At what stage of the testing process are workers' drug test results updated?
- Results are updated immediately upon submission by the testing facility.
- If the initial result is non-conclusive, the facility sends the specimen to a contracted laboratory for additional testing. The Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews the laboratory findings and information provided by the worker, then updates the result in the FCA platform.
-
Why haven’t I received my drug test results, or why has my test exceeded the 72-hour turnaround time?
Most drug test results are available immediately upon completion. In some cases, however, a specimen requires further analysis and is forwarded to a certified laboratory for confirmation testing. Laboratory results are typically available within 3–5 business days.
If the laboratory result requires review, a Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the donor directly, for example to verify a prescription. Once the MRO review is complete, the final result will be posted and an automated notification will be sent.
